Say the word ‘temple’ and you’ll most likely think of calm, peaceful, nice stuff where Buddhists are chilling out, ornate statues are looking pretty fine and everyone is on their best behaviour. Screw all of that, push it through some seriously creative minds and what do you get? Thailand’s craziest White Temple in Chiang Rai. The most badass, messed up place you’ve ever seen! Thailand, you never fail to amaze me.  Welcome to Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple of Thailand!

The craziest white temple in Thailand

The White Temple in Chiang Rai Thailand

Are you ready for this? The moped is parked up, I’m seeing weird stuff already. Excellent. Let’s go explore!

Time to enter. It’s only 10am but hey ho, the party has started already! Anyone for a drink? I am at a temple right? Umm, bottoms up?!

We’ve entered with a bang. The White Temple so far has been very hospitable but whoa there, I’m not so sure about this…

Let’s follow this couple. If anything weird is going to go down, they’ll be the first to get it. Yep, they can go first…

So far so good The detail really blows your mind. There’s so much to look at, take in, enjoy. Thank heavens I’m wearing sunglasses. This place is so white, goths might just struggle…

What comes next is just completely random! Photography is unfortunately a no no inside the temple.  Let’s just say that Michael Jackson, Spiderman, Elvis, Doraemon and Neo from The Matrix are having a party in there.  That’s all I’m going to say about that.

The madness turns from white to the highest luxury: gold.  Gold baby yeeeeeah.

This certainly wasn’t made in 5 minutes

Time to use the ladies and well I never, even the bathrooms are looking lovely. Cute cute cute!

That was one hell of a magical ride and long may it prosper! It is being continuously developed by a genius of an artist called Kositpipat and is one of Thailand’s number one attractions in Teacake’s personal opinion.  Don’t miss it!

  1. Crazy stuff Alice!

We’ve heard much about it but never visited and never researched this place. We passed through Chiang Rai some 20 times. Visa runs from Chiang Mai to Myanmar, when they allowed the 2 week runs back before the coup of last year. My only image was sitting in 2 bus stations in Chiang Rai for like 30 minutes per sitting lol….having no clue why we waited so long when no one got on the bus.

Well, it’s Thailand, as we all know ;) I could see Chiang Rai and surrounding areas looked beautiful and hey, this is truly Thai wacky, images and all. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Fantastic post! I visited this temple back in 2010 and it was staggering and a truly unique place. It felt like something out of another world. I heard that it was damaged in an earthquake though back in 2014… do you know anything about that? Really sad, however I believe they are working on rebuilding it now…. hopefully they do! Would be such a shame for travellers to not be able to experience this place. Love it. Great post.
